Caring for Your Ostomy Site The method of changing your ostomy pouch may depend on the type of ostomy that you have and pouch that you use. Be sure to consult with your specialized ostomy nurse for specialized instructions on how to care for your ostomy site. We can apply general wound care principles to the care of your ostomy site. The following may serve as a guide for your ostomy care. Do not forget to consult with your doctor and ostomy nurse to maximize the care of your ostomy site.
Clean the stoma site with non irritating soapy warm water. Then gently pat the area dry. A healthy stoma site should be beefy red and slightly protrude from the skin. If you notice that the site is painful, gray or brown in color, or that there is weeping around the site contact your doctor immediately.
Remember to check the adhesion site before applying your bag. The skin should be dry, clean, and intact to maximize the adhesion of the bag to your skin. Moisture, including perspiration, can reduce the time your bag will maintain its adhesion. A proper fitting pouch should maintain a secure seal, be able to move freely with the patient, and perhaps most importantly be comfortable for the patient.
Once the bag is attached firmly to the skin, it can generally be used for more than one bowel movement. The frequency with which you change your pouch will depend on many factors, including the type of ostomy you have, diet, the frequency of bowel movements, etc. In general, most ostomy bags can be used for 3-5 days before needing to be changed. Remember, if you notice any areas of leakage around the pouch, odor from the site, or breakdown of skin at the site where the pouch is attached, the pouch should be removed and the area thoroughly cleaned. If site problems do occur, it is best to consult with a specialized ostomy nurse or your doctor for further recommendations. Keep in mind that a wide variety of ostomy supplies are available to help you care for your ostomy site. If the current system you are using becomes uncomfortable at any time, you can always try something new.
