Diet and Your Ostomy
Immediately following surgery your physician may place you on a bland diet until healing occurs, then you can introduce more foods in. You will learn your bodies response to certain foods and may find the need to eliminate or decrease the amount of foods that cause you flatulence or excessive odor.
Basic tips about diet and nutrition for ostomy:
- Chew food well
- Eat adequate portions and eat often
- Stay in shape
- Drink lots of fluids
- Make scheduled alterations to changes in diet
- Monitor bowel movements and keep a log
Foods that can cause problems:

Ostomy
odor is caused by bacteria digesting certain foods and creating odorous
gases. This gas moves through the bowel to the ostomy pouch, just as
gas would pass through and be expelled as flatus.

Eating certain foods will thicken your stool output; such as yoghurt, bananas, milk, peanut butter, breads, cheeses, pasta, potatoes and rice.
Fruits, juices, chocolate and green beans will liquefy stool output.
Facing life with your new ostomy requires adjustment and a positive approach to dealing with your new body image and daily routines. A positive attitude and education will equip you to deal with challenges you may face.
