Which Ostomy Pouch is right for you?
The location and type of stoma you have ( ileostomy, colostomy or urostomy ) will determine the ostomy pouch you need. Both urostomy and ostomy pouches come in one and two piece systems.
One piece systems involve the wafer that adheres to the skin and the ostomy pouch that is attached to the wafer. This type of appliance is appropriate for formed stool that can be removed and replaced each time it is full.
Two piece systems have the wafer that is attached to the skin and the ostomy pouch that clips onto the wafer. This means you can keep the wafer in place ( if well fitted and adhered ) until soiled or non adhering, usually after 2-3 days.
Both the one and two piece systems are available in closed or drainable pouches. Two piece systems allow you to remove the ostomy pouch and drain or empty the waste and reapply. These drainable ostomy pouches can be rinsed out and reapplied many times for cost effectiveness. For loose stool the drainable pouch is the most appropriate option.
Remember to clean the stoma well, pat dry and assess the skin each time you take off the wafer and change the ostomy pouch, for irritation or infection. The
skin at the stoma should be clean, dry, and intact to maximize the adhesion of the
ostomy pouch to your skin. Moisture, including perspiration, can reduce the time
your pouch will maintain its adhesion. A proper fitting pouch should
maintain a secure seal, and be able to move freely with the patient, and
perhaps most importantly be comfortable for the patient.
Ostomy pouches come in various sizes and you will be fitted prior to leaving the hospital and taught how to clean and prep the skin, apply the device and drain or empty the ostomy pouch.
